Report: Former Florida State DC Charles Kelly interviewing with Colorado State

With Jimbo Fisher gone and Willie Taggart at the reigns of Florida State’s football program, it’s already been announced that Taggart will bring a new defensive coordinator, Jim Leavitt, with him to Tallahassee. Whether former defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will remain on the staff in some capacity, however, has been a mystery.

It now appears Kelly may be targeting a new landing spot.

Footballscoop.com reported Monday that Kelly is expected to interview with Colorado State head coach Mike Bobo for the Rams’ defensive coordinator opening. Colorado State’s current defensive coordinator, Marty English, has announced he will retire following the Rams’ appearance in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 16.

Kelly faced criticism on several occassions this season as Florida State, ranked No. 3 in the preseason AP Poll, stumbled to a 6-6 record. The most heat came after the Seminoles allowed rival Miami to engineer a game-winning drive that was capped by a touchdown pass with 6 seconds remaining.

Kelly has served as Florida State’s defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. In 2013, he was the Seminoles’ special teams coordinator and linebackers coach when the team won the national title.
