Report: Defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt re-signed by Oregon to 4-year deal

Jim Leavitt-Florida State-defensive coordinator

It looks like Florida State will have to turn elsewhere in its defensive coordinator search.

In a stunning turn of events, instead of following Willie Taggart to Florida State, Jim Leavitt is staying put at Oregon.

When Taggart accepted the head coaching position at FSU in early December it was widely expected that Leavitt, who was head coach at South Florida from 1997-2009, would head to Tallahassee as the Seminoles’ defensive coordinator.

However, Leavitt is staying in Eugene as Oregon’s defensive coordinator for new Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal through 2021.

Leavitt arrived at Oregon this past season as part of Taggart’s staff and made an instant difference. The Ducks allowed 5.07 yards per play, an improvement from the 6.41 in 2016, and their points allowed average dipped from a school-worst 41.4 per game to 29.0.

Oregon forced 25 turnovers this season, twice as many as last season (12), and also amassed four defensive touchdowns.
