Apparently, if Arkansas decides to fire coach Bret Bielema at the end of this season, it wouldn’t be quite as expensive as previously thought.
Bielema’s buyout would cost $5.9 million, not the $15.4 million that was previously reported, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. While the Razorbacks’ coach would still get a nice payday, it’s not nearly as much as what the total was thought to have been.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette had a legal counsel evaluate Bielema’s contract, which shows the buyout amount decreasing by about $159,000 per month. The $15.4 million figure is used as the basis to calculate the buyout figure. So, by multiplying $159,000 times the number of months remaining on the contract, the buyout figure would be $5.9 million.
It remains to be seen whether the Razorbacks will part ways with Bielema, but they have certainly struggled this season. They’re 2-3 after last week’s loss at South Carolina, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier with a matchup at No. 1 Alabama this Saturday.
Bielema is 27-29 in five seasons as Arkansas’ coach.
The Razorbacks and Crimson Tide kick off this Saturday at 7:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.
