Report: Arizona State DC Phil Bennett planning to leave, could join Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M

Jimbo Fisher is currently seeking assistants to fill out his new staff at Texas A&M. And one potential target to become defensive coordinator is reportedly leaving his current job.

According to Football Scoop, Arizona State defensive coordinator Phil Bennett is planning to leave the school. Bennett, a Texas A&M alum who lives in College Station, TX, with his wife, could be leaving the Sun Devils for the Aggies.

Football Scoop reports that Bennett going to Texas A&M “feels like that is where this is headed.”

Bennett just finished his first season at Arizona State after previously serving as Baylor’s defensive coordinator from 2011-16. He has ties to Texas A&M, as he served as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator from 1995-96 and started his coaching career by coaching defensive ends at Texas A&M from 1978-81.

Bennett also played at Texas A&M as a defensive end from 1974-77.

Bennett was SMU’s head coach from 2002-07, but went 18-51 over his six seasons at the helm.

The Sun Devils made an unorthodox move when they hired longtime NFL coach and ESPN analyst Herm Edwards as their new head coach. Perhaps that move played a factor in Bennett reportedly making a decision to move on after just one season.
