Rounding up the visits

The result on the field didn’t go Michigan’s way against Michigan State last Saturday, but recruiting visits fared better for the Wolverines.

Michigan hosted several standouts from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes. Commits Jalen Mayfield and Kevin Doyle were among them, but a pair of uncommitted 2018 players from California were also high on the list of guests. Amon-Ra St. Brown, a 5-star wide receiver from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, and 4-star safety Julius Irvin of Anaheim Servite made it to Ann Arbor.

St. Brown is ranked as the No. 1 player in California and the No. 2 wide receiver in the country by the 247Sports composite. Michigan signed four top wide receivers in 2017, including Donovan Peoples-Jones, the top-ranked player at the position.

St. Brown told 247Sports that he enjoyed the visit, including meeting coach Jim Harbaugh and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton. St. Brown said the atmosphere in the stadium was a big draw for him as well.

Irvin said the style of play employed by defensive coordinator Don Brown is a reason he is considering Michigan.

Also visiting the Big House were wide receiver Shocky Jacques-Louis, a 2018 Tennessee commit, and Ryland Goede, a 2019 4-star tight end.

Goede, from Acworth, Ga., was making his first visit to Ann Arbor. Tight end will be a priority position for the Wolverines the next couple of recruiting classes after they lost Devin Asiasi (2016) as a transfer and failed to sign a tight end in the 2017 class.

Fellow Georgian Christopher Hinton is already committed to Michigan for the 2019 class. Hinton gave Goede his opinion of Michigan.

A closer look at Emil Ekiyor

The Indianapolis Star is running a video series entitled “A Season Inside: Cathedral football” and the latest episode focuses on offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor and his recruiting process.

Ekiyor is the top-rated player in the 2018 class of commits for the Wolverines. He committed to Michigan on Oct. 2, 2016, and has told Land of 10 why he believes it’s the right fit for him. Alabama has been pressing hard on its recruitment of Ekiyor, including hosting him for an official visit on Sept. 30. That has plenty of people speculating about his commitment, but Ekiyor has been open about making sure he has a Plan B.

Michigan offensive coordinator and line coach Tim Drevno went to Cathedral’s 48-7 win against Jeffersonville on Sept. 22. Ekiyor is scheduled to take his official visit to Michigan on Nov. 25 for the Ohio State game.
