The first game of the Mario Cristobal era for Oregon football was a forgettable one, as the Ducks were beaten in every phase en route to 38-28 loss to Boise State in the 20David Becker/Getty Images17 Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday.
The Ducks were woeful in the first half with 4 turnovers. They trailed 24-0, but were able to stay in the game thanks to 2 defensive touchdowns deep in the red zone in less than 40 seconds.
Though the offense showed life in the second half, it was nowhere near what people were expecting when the Ducks removed the interim tag from Cristobal’s name last week, making him the full-time coach.
The fans came out in droves on Twitter, voicing their frustration at the flat performance.
NEVER listen to athletes in determining next head coach. RT @YahooForde: Oregon players lobbied for Mario Cristobal as their next coach, then promptly went out and laid an egg in Las Vegas Bowl. Ducks were physically dominated by Boise State. Great win for the Broncos.

Mario Cristobal starts 0-1 at Oregon, just like Chip Kelly. I’m guessing that’s where the comparisons will end.

I really want Mario Cristobal to do well. But, this play calling is horrible. Just so reminiscent of the poor offence we have had in 2nd half’s all year.
And what’s with the discipline…. #LVBowl #OregonDucks

one game sample size on Mario Cristobal: horrendous play calling

Mario Cristobal is completely out of his depth, two major individual errors on the fumbles. Oregon's D seems sound but has no dynamism on the DL

I was not impressed by the performance that this Mario Cristobal coached team put on today! Hopefully they can still get a good recruiting class! #GoDucks

Good thing Oregon locked up Cristobal w/out waiting for a sample🤔

However, there were some who have optimism that Cristobal is a good hire and the man to lead Oregon football back to national prominence.
I don't care what people say, Mario Cristobal is a good coach. Had to deal with a lot in the last 8 days. Give him a chance.

That being said they did lay am egg, but I really believe the Cristobal hire will pay dividends for this team. Who is to say how much worse it would have been with an outside or no hire even at this point.
The team feels completely abandoned and tried to play off emotion

A one-game sample is no doubt not enough to make a full judgment of the decision, but given how vocal the players were for Cristobal as the coach, it’s shocking how poorly prepared they appeared and the amount of mental errors and turnovers. It seems like he failed in his first chance to make an impact, with the fans at least.
