Purdue-Wisconsin basketball preview
The Boilermakers enter play currently ranked as the No. 6 team in the country, according to the latest AP Poll rankings. In addition, Purdue was ranked as one of the four No. 1 seeds by the NCAA Tournament selection committee on Sunday. Wisconsin enters the game currently unranked.
Entering play on Thursday, Purdue holds an overall record of 23-4, and has gone 12-2 in Big Ten play. Because of their two losses in the Big Ten, though, the Boilermakers currently find themselves No. 3 in the Big Ten standings behind Ohio State and Michigan State.
In fact, the Buckeyes and the Spartans are the two teams that Purdue lost two in consecutive games. Ohio State ended Purdue’s 19-game winning streak on Wednesday, which was its first loss since Nov. 23 against Western Kentucky. Michigan State handed Purdue its fourth loss of the season on Saturday.
On the other side, Wisconsin enters this matchup with Purdue with an overall record of 11-16, and has only gone 4-10 in conference play. The Badgers are having a tough season, and are currently in the lower-half of the Big Ten standings.
At one point in the season, Wisconsin rattled off a five-game wining streak. However, the team has struggled mightily of late, losing nine of their last 11 games since the win streak. In that stretch, the only two wins the Badgers came out with came against Illinois.
Thursday’s game will mark the second and final regular-season meeting between Purdue and Wisconsin. In their first matchup on Jan. 16, the Boilermakers won in convincing fashion at home, defeating the Badgers, 78-50. In that game, Purdue guard Carsen Edwards scored 21 points to go along with 5 steals, and forward Vincent Edwards added 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
As previously mentioned, Purdue is coming off a loss at Michigan State on Saturday. Purdue lost the nail-biter, 68-65, despite a strong, 25-point performance from center Isaac Haas.
Wisconsin is coming off a 83-72 loss at home to Michigan on Sunday. In that loss, forward Ethan Happ scored a game-high 29 points to go along with 7 rebounds.
