Purdue-Minnesota basketball: Preview

Purdue and Minnesota played each other earlier this season on Jan. 13 at Minnesota and the Boilermakers ran away with an 81-47 victory. Purdue was 17-2 overall after that win and was clicking both offensively and defensively.

Purdue forward Vincent Edwards scored 25 points in that game and he has missed the last two contests the Boilermakers have played due an ankle injury. He has averaged 14.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season.

The 14.9 points per game is second on the team behind Carsen Edwards, who averages 17.4 per contest. Edwards is coming off a win on Thursday against Illinois in which he scored 40 — going 11-of-19 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range while making 14-of-16 from the free throw line.

In the first matchup between these two teams, Purdue out-rebounded Minnesota, 46-29 and had four players score at least 12 points in the game, while Minnesota had none. Minnesota also shot 19 percent from 3-point range compared to Purdue’s 40 percent.

The Boilermakers have lost just one true home game this season and that came against Ohio State, 64-63. This game against Minnesota will be Purdue’s final contest at home this season.

For the Golden Gophers, it will be their final game of the season as well as the Big Ten Tournament is slated to go from Feb. 28-March 4. As it stands now, Purdue would have the No. 2-seed in the conference tournament, which means the Boilermakers would get a double bye to start.

Minnesota enters the matchup as the No. 11 team in the Big Ten standings and if the team holds that spot, they would have to play in the first day of the conference tournament against the No. 14-seeded team. The Golden Gophers have lost multiple games in decisive fashion, aside from the game against Purdue earlier, Minnesota has lost by 30 to Michigan State, 24 to Indiana, 23 to Northwestern and 18 to Ohio State.

The Golden Gophers are led in scoring by Jordan Murphy, who averages 17.1 points per game. Right behind Murphy, at 16.8 points per contest, is Nate Mason. The team has endured a number of negatives this season, including a season-ending injury to Amir Coffey and an expulsion to Reggie Lynch due to sexual misconduct.
