Pitt-N.C. State preview
This is the first time Pitt and N.C. State are meeting since the Panthers entering the ACC in 2013.
The last time N.C. State played at Pittsburgh was in 1987 when they were shutout 34-0.
N.C. State took the most recent meeting vs. Pitt 38-31 in 2009.
No. 21 N.C. State enters Saturday’s contest atop the ACC Atlantic (5-1, 3-0) and riding a five-game winning streak, which has sparked reported contract extension talks for Dave Doeren.
N.C. State defeated Louisville 39-25. Running back Nyheim Hines had 102 yards and two touchdowns .
Pitt (2-4, 0-2) is coming off a narrow 27-24 defeat at Syracuse. It was the first time in five years and first time in ACC play that the Panthers have lost to the Orange.
The Panthers will have to play the rest of the season without their starting quarterback, as Max Browne will miss the rest of the season following a surgery he had on the shoulder he injured in the loss to Syracuse, according to coach Pat Narduzzi.Browne went 15-of-22 for 161 yards before leaving the game vs. Syracuse in the third quarter due to the injury. Backup quarterback Ben DiNucci replaced Browne and went 6-of-10 for 55 yards.
The senior Browne, a graduate transfer from Southern Cal, posted 997 passing yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions this season.
With Browne out, Pitt could turn to more of a rushing attack to lessen the load on DiNucci, as the Panthers have five players (Jordan Whitehead 13.2, Maurice Ffrench 8.0, Quadree Henderson 5.6, Darrin Hall 4.1 and Qadree Ollison 4.0) averaging at least 4.0 yards per carry.
For Pitt to pull off the upset, it will need to keep pace with a potent N.C. State offense.
Led by quarterback Ryan Finley, the Wolfpack have the 25th ranked total offense in the nation. Finley has a sparking 10/0 touchdown to interception ratio, while amassing 1,770 yards with a quarterback rating of 152.3.
Finley’s favorite target has been senior Jaylen Samuels. Through six games, Samuels has 5o receptions, 425 yards and three touchdowns. Samuels has also been productive in the run game as well, with 129 yards, 5.2 yards per carry and five touchdowns.
Slowing down Finley and Samuels could be a problem for a Pitt defense that is allowing an average of 30.8 points per game this season — 92nd most in the FBS. Pitt’s pass defense ranks 107th, giving up 263.4 yards per game.
In three of their four losses this year, the Panthers have given up 33 points or more.
