Penn State reportedly tried to block Ohio State from wearing its all-gray jerseys

Penn State reportedly tried to stop Ohio State from wearing the all-gray jerseys it officially revealed on Monday, according to Jordan Strack from WTOL-11, a television station in Toledo, Ohio.

According to Strack, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith “got involved” to make sure the jersey was okayed for the game.

That note about Ohio State having all-white uniforms for The Game is new, too.

From the NCAA rulebook:

11. What are the rules about the contrast of jerseys and numbers? By rule each team must wear a jersey that has numbers that clearly contrast with the body of the jersey (Rule 1-4.5-b).

• The number itself must clearly contrast, even if it has an outline or border.
• The number should be clearly visible from a significant distance.
• If there is any question as to whether the number and the jersey contrast, the jersey may not be worn.

Here’s what those Ohio State jerseys look like:

While the numbers and the jersey are both gray, the numbers are pretty clearly dark gray, while the surrounding area is a much lighter shade. That contrast should be viewable from a distance, which would satisfy the above rules.

The rulebook also has the reasoning behind the guideline:

“The rules for contrasting numbers and visibility are intended to provide clearly visible numbers for the stakeholders: coaches, fans, media, television audience, etc. This means that the numbers should be clearly visible at a distance under a variety of weather and lighting conditions.”

Ohio State-Penn State kicks off Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on FOX.
