Penn State-Michigan State series history
Penn State and Michigan State are tied at 15-15-1 all-time in the series.
In last year’s meeting, Penn State secured a division title (head-to-head edge over Ohio State) with a dominant 45-12 win against the Spartans.
That win was in stark contrast to the previous season. In 2015, Michigan State routed Penn State 55-16 — the Spartans’ biggest win in the series.
This season, Penn State is the Big Ten’s highest-ranked team at No. 2, though the Nittany Lions play at No. 6 Ohio State before traveling to play Michigan State in Week 10. The Nittany Lions most recently played then-No. 19 Michigan, routing the Wolverines 42-13.
Nittany Lions RB Saquon Barkley is the leading Heisman contender after another big game. Barkley rushed for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 15 carries in the Michigan rout. He also had 53 receiving yards and a touchdown. For the season, Barkley has 757 rushing yards, 448 receiving yards and 273 return yards. Barkley has totaled 13 touchdowns this season, scoring rushing, receiving, returning and passing touchdowns in the Nittany Lions’ undefeated start.
QB Trace McSorley has also been a star for Penn State. McSorley has 1,879 passing yards and 254 rushing yards.
Michigan State has regrouped from a 3-9 record in 2016 to start 6-1 this year. The Spartans beat Indiana 17-9 on Saturday. Thanks to the win, Michigan State moved up to No. 16 in the new AP Poll Top 25 rankings. Before getting Penn State, the Spartans hit the road to play Northwestern.
The Spartans rely on QB Brian Lewerke and a physical defense. Michigan State’s defense forced five turnovers in the 14-10 upset win at Michigan earlier this season. Offensively, Lewerke has 1,362 passing yards and 313 rushing yards. He has 10 passing touchdowns and 3 rushing scores.
