Penn State is a 9.5-point favorite against Michigan. The over/under is 44.5 points. The Nittany Lions figure to have a large edge, as it’s a night game at Beaver Stadium and also a White Out.

However, Michigan has dominated the series against Penn State. Just last year, the Wolverines crushed Penn State 49-10 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Penn State, of course, regrouped to win the rest of its regular season games and win the Big Ten Championship Game.

This year, Penn State is 6-0 and ranked No. 2. Michigan is 5-1 and ranked No. 19. Expect Nittany Lions RB Saquon Barkley and the Penn State defense to do enough to win by double digits.

Penn State-Michigan preview

Michigan has a clear edge in the series all-time at 13-7. The Wolverines have won the last three games, too. In 2014, Michigan won 18-13 at home. In 2015, the Wolverines won 28-16 on the road. Last year, Michigan routed the Nittany Lions, 49-10.

Before Michigan’s three-game run, Penn State had won four in a row: 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013. In the 2013 game, the Nittany Lions beat No. 18 Michigan 43-40 in a four-overtime thriller.

Penn State (6-0 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) is averaging 39.7 points and giving up 9 points per game this season. RB Saquon Barkley is the team’s biggest star. He’s scored rushing, receiving, returning and passing touchdowns this season.

Saquon Barkley statistics

  • Rushing: 102 carries, 649 rushing yards, 6.4 yards per attempt, 6 touchdowns
  • Receiving: 29 receptions, 395 yards, 13.6 yards per attempt, 2 touchdowns
  • Kick returns: 8 returns, 258 yards, 32.2 yards per return, 1 touchdown
  • Passing: 1-for-1 passing, 16 yards, 1 touchdown.

But Barkley doesn’t do it alone. QB Trace McSorley has passed for 1,597 yards, 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. McSorley has 178 rushing yards and 4 scores. Two wide receivers have at least 300 receiving yards: Juwan Johnson and DaeSean Hamilton. Johnson scored the touchdown on the final play of the game to beat Iowa, 21-19. Earlier this season, Hamilton became the program’s all-time leader in receptions.

On defense, Jason Cabinda is first on the team with 40 total tackles. But Amani Oruwariye has contributed with his 3 interceptions while Shareef Miller leads the team with 6.5 tackles for loss.

Michigan (5-1 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) averages 27.2 points per game while surrendering 14.7 points per game. Ty Isaac and Karan Higdon lead the rushing attack. Though Isaac has 416 yards to Higdon’s 410, Higdon was the star in Michigan’s 27-20 overtime win at Indiana. Higdon rushed for 200 yards as the Wolverines beat the Hoosiers.

With QB Wilton Speight injured, John O’Korn has become the starter. O’Korn has struggled, however. He is 45-for-82 passing for 563 yards, 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions. He had three interceptions in the 14-10 loss to Michigan State.

The Wolverines have been dominant on defense. Devin Bush leads with 50 total tackles. Chase Winovich has also been a force with 40 total tackles, 8 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Maurice Hurst has also been one of the best defenders in the country with 31 total tackles and 7 tackles for loss.
