In a historic year for SEC coaching changes, almost everyone has an opinion on which of the six SEC schools that changed head coaches got things right. And believe it or not, notorious SEC talker Paul Finebaum is among those with a take on the matter.
During his weekly Monday morning appearance on WJOX’s Opening Drive in Birmingham, Ala., former Alabama QB Jay Barker posed the question to the SEC Network personality.
Here’s how it went down:
Jay Barker: “Who do you think is the best hire in the SEC, so far, during this unbelievable round of hires for a lot of these teams?”
Paul Finebaum: “I’ll answer that on a couple of different levels. Certainly, Jimbo Fisher is the most impactful hire. You have to wonder what his state of mind is and whether he needs a recharge, but I pick him over at Texas A&M because I think he has the best chance of making an immediate impact on the SEC West. On the other side, I do think Dan Mullen was a very good hire at Florida because of the familiarity. Certainly [Joe] Moorhead at Mississsippi State was the cleanest hire, and also he may be in the best position because of Nick Fitzgerald. So I would start with those three. I think the rest of them are ‘to be determined.'”
That leaves Arkansas’ Chad Morris, Ole Miss’ Matt Luke and Tennessee’s Jeremy Pruitt in Finebaum’s wait-and-see category.
Fisher, who signed a record-setting 10-year, $75-million contract to leave Florida State for College Station, certainly arrives with the highest expectations. After all, the Aggies fired Kevin Sumlin, who went 51-26 through six seasons with the Aggies, to make that move happen.
Fisher took over for Bobby Bowden at Florida State back in 2010, earning a national title and a sterling 83-23 record through his eight-year tenure in Tallahassee. The former Nick Saban assistant was brought to Texas A&M to do what Sumlin could not: Consistently beat Alabama and win an SEC West title.
No pressure, right?
