Paul Finebaum on Butch Jones after Alabama loss: ‘I would not have let him get on the plane last night’

Paul Finebaum is a Tennessee alumnus, so maybe more so than any coaching job he comments on his opinion should carry weight when discussing the potential of a coaching change.

During a Sunday morning appearance on SportsCenter alongside Booger McFarland, Finebaum was asked to address Butch Jones’ status at Tennessee on the morning after a 45-7 loss at Alabama, and the prominent SEC personality delivered both a rant and the latest intel from his sources on campus.

“I would not have let him get on the plane last night, but obviously he needed a ride home” Finebaum said. “I cannot imagine this university allowing this to go on any longer.”

When pressed on what he meant by “any longer,” Finebaum tried to explain what he meant on a potential timeline for Jones’ dismissal.

“There’s mixed signals coming out of that school right now,” he said. “One report said they’re going to let him go to Kentucky. If Tennessee needs to beat Kentucky to show that it’s a legitimate program, they ought to shut it down, because after what I saw yesterday and I’m an alum, so I think I have a right to speak…”

Finebaum was cut off by one of the panelists, who wanted to know if all of the bluster was about losing a game to Alabama that most already knew the Vols would lose, before he could finish that thought.

That’s when Booger McFarland jumped in on Finebaum’s behalf after he started an explanation on 12 quarters without an offensive touchdown.

“It’s about how you play,” McFarland explained. “If you just watch this Tennessee program, this is a prodigal program. I mean Peyton Manning is their most famous alumni. If you go back to that game against Georgia, Peyton Manning is there being honored and you lose 41-0 against Georgia. If you just look at how they go about their business, to me it’s not ‘if’ it is ‘when’ and if that is the case, what are they waiting on? Why not put the man out of his misery?”

Time will tell if these SEC experts are right, but for now Butch Jones is expected to get a chance to finish out the season if he can finding a winning groove after a 3-4 start to the season.
