With Baker Mayfield running the show, Oklahoma has done just about everything aside from being crowned as national champions.
Set to see the College Football Playoff for the second time in three seasons, the Mayfield era may soon end with exactly that.
No. 2 Oklahoma will open up the new year with a Rose Bowl battle with No. 3 Georgia and the winner will advance to take on the victor of No. 1 Clemson and No. 4 Alabama. The staff at Yahoo! Sports attempted to project how each of those two much-anticipated matchups will play out, and depending on who you ask, it won’t end well for the Sooners.
Of the six Yahoo! Sports writers to make picks, only Dan Wolken had Oklahoma falling to Georgia, which he also picked as the eventual national champion.
“The other semifinal will see Oklahoma and Georgia square off in the Rose Bowl. The Bulldogs haven’t won a national title since 1980. It’s been 17 years since the Sooners last wore the crown. They’ll have the benefit of Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield leading their offense, while the Bulldogs turn to true freshman Jake Fromm.”
Despite the five other writers sending the Sooners to the title game, though, only George Schroeder picked Oklahoma to emerge as the last team standing.
Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma each earned one championship pick, while the other three favored Clemson to repeat as national champions.
In any case, if Oklahoma is able to top Georgia, it will make for another meeting with a college football power after the Sooners have seen both, Alabama and Clemson in recent years.
Following the 2013 season, Following the 2013 season, Oklahoma met Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, which became a 45-31 Sooners victory. The following season, Clemson cruised past Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl, 40-6, which set up a rematch in 2015 in the College Football Playoff Semifinal, which also saw Oklahoma lose, 31-17.
In the College Football Playoff yet again, if Oklahoma wants revenge on Clemson, it must soon first outlast Georgia on Jan. 1, 2018.
