Oklahoma State and Texas play Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, for a Big 12 clash in Austin, Texas, where the Cowboys have won four straight.
For only the second time in program history, the Cowboys have won consecutive games against the Longhorns, winning 30-27 in 2015 and 49-31 last year. Armed with veterans such as quarterback Mason Rudolph, receiver James Washington and linebacker Chad Whitener, they carry confidence into the matchup.

Oklahoma State-Texas preview, keys to the game
Slow Sam Ehlinger
Only once this season have the Cowboys allowed their opponent to pass and rush for more than 200 yards. It was also their only loss of the season, a 44-31 defeat against TCU. Last week against Oklahoma, Ehlinger, Texas’ freshman quarterback, rushed for 110 yards, following a 107-yard performance against Kansas State. He’s the Longhorns’ leading rusher and passer.
The Cowboys have emphasized tackling and running to the ball this week in practice in hopes of limiting Ehlinger’s ability to run. If they manage to contain Ehlinger, it greatly improves the Cowboys’ chances of improving to 3-1 in Big 12 play.
Take advantage of options
In Washington, the Cowboys have arguably the best receiver in the country. As a result, Texas’ stout defense will make him a focal. From there, it’s on Rudolph to take advantage of the other options available to him.
Washington and fellow senior Marcell Ateman have both eclipsed 100 receiving yards in four-straight games. Ateman, the Cowboys’ X-factor, gives Rudolph a reliable second option should the Longhorns hone in on Washington. Junior Jalen McCleskey, too, is a weapon out of the slot.
The Rudolph-Washington combo gets most of the hype, but Oklahoma State’s depth at receiver means Rudolph doesn’t need to rely solely on his No. 1 target.
Overcome the atmosphere
Yes, the Cowboys have won four straight in Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, but the last didn’t come easily. Only a sophomore, Rudolph struggled as the defense did the heavy lifting in the Cowboys’ 30-27 victory.
With excitement surrounding Texas in Tom Herman’s first year as coach, it’s likely the Cowboys will find themselves in the middle of an intense atmosphere Saturday. However, it shouldn’t be much of a problem given the growth this team has undergone in the past two years.
Rudolph is a senior. He’s led the Cowboys to victories in bowl games and tough road venues. The pressure is on because Oklahoma State is one loss from falling out of the College Football Playoff conversation, but with Rudolph at the helm, this team feels little to no extra pressure.
