Is Oklahoma State a step ahead of in-state foe Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff race?
That’s not the case in the Associated Press poll, which has the Sooners and Pokes places at Nos. 10 and 11, respectively, but CBS Sports has the roles reversed.
As part of its latest College Football Playoff projections, CBS Sports ranked the 6-1 Cowboys at No. 10; one spot ahead of the Sooners at No. 11. CBS Sports didn’t provide a reasoning for the ranking, but it may have something to do with the resume each brings to the table.
Similar to Oklahoma State, Oklahoma sit at 6-1 through seven games. Although the Sooners do boast the best non-conference victory among all Big 12 members — a Week 2 road victory over then-No. 2 Ohio State — the Sooners loss came at the hands of an Iowa State team that was 2-2 at the time, and in Norman, no less. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State’s lone loss came at home, as well, but the TCU team that topped the Pokes in Stillwater is now firmly in the College Football Playoff picture at 7-0 and No. 4 nationally.
Depending on how next week plays out, we may be in store for a Bedlam battle on Nov. 11 with increased stakes between a pair of 7-1 squads. If that proves true, one of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will surely rise from their current placement in CBS Sports playoff rankings, while the other’s hopes will be effectively ended.
