Former Oklahoma State receiver Marcell Ateman believes he is a first-round talent in the upcoming NFL draft, even if he knows he won’t be taken that high.
In an interview with KVTV News, the former Cowboys wideout said he views himself as a first-round pick. He said he didn’t put up the numbers of a first-rounder because of his role in the Oklahoma State offense, but that his game tape shows what he can do. And he promised to prove that with whatever team he plays for at the next level.

Here’s what Ateman had to say.
“My film speaks for it, you know what I mean? I was just in a kind of offense where I had to play my role. I’ve always understood that when my time came, I was going to show out.”
“Throughout this past season, I did everything I could to – maybe I didn’t get as many touches – but I still was going to make sure I perform. It just comes with it sometimes. I just know that whenever I get to that level, get my opportunity, I’m going to make sure I take advantage of it.”
“I just know my game. I know who I am as a person, and what I can bring to any team. I know, me personally, I’m a first-round pick. It don’t matter to me where I go. If I’m first [round]. If I’m third. If I’m fifth. If I’m undrafted. I’m going to perform whatever team I get to. That’s just my mentality, and that’s just who I am. So I can’t even look at how people judge me. But whenever I step on that field, my game is going to speak for itself.”
Ateman was the Cowboys’ No. 2 receiver in 2017 behind Biletnikoff winner James Washington. He caught 59 passes for 1,156 yards and 8 touchdowns, and he pulled in some highlight reel catches against Iowa State, Texas and Oklahoma.

Despite those numbers and highlights, Ateman hasn’t gotten as much draft hype as Washington, who is ranked among the top receivers in this draft class. He’ll get a chance to prove his draft stock should be higher at the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He’s one of five Oklahoma State players to receive an invitation, along with Washington, quarterback Mason Rudolph, receiver Chris Lacy and safety Tre Flowers.
The combine begins Tuesday, Feb. 26. Ateman and the rest of the participating receivers are scheduled to report Feb. 28. The draft kicks off Thursday, April 26, in Arlington, Texas.
