Stay up to date with Oklahoma football recruiting with the latest news and notes and analysis in the daily edition of DieHards’ Wagon Wheels. In this edition, we look at what Oklahoma’s coaches did on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma’s coaches rack up the miles

The Oklahoma coach spent the weekend in New York with quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Sooners landing a sixth Heisman Trophy is not going to hurt recruiting.

However, coach Lincoln Riley and defensive ends coach Calvin Thibodeaux worked in a trip to Harrisburg, Pa., for a visit with 5-star defensive end Micah Parsons before decamping in the Big Apple.

Of course, Parsons took an unofficial visit to Penn State following his visit with Riley. The only uncommitted 5-star recruit on Oklahoma’s board for the early signing period will announce his choice when he signs on Dec. 20.

Riley also made several visits in Florida. He and defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks got some face time with IMG Academy 4-star cornerback Brendan Radley-Hiles prior to the New York trip.

Hitting up commits and targets in the Eastern Time Zone was the goal late last week. Riley and linebackers coach Tim Kish were both in Columbus, Ohio, to see 3-star linebacker Brian Asamoah.

Expect all of Oklahoma’s coaches to spend the majority of this coming week on the road. The contact periods runs through Saturday before the dead period starts and coaches turn all their attention to College Football Playoff and the semifinal meeting with Georgia in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Because of the Heisman Trophy ceremony, Oklahoma did not host official visitors last weekend. The Sooners traditionally host their team banquet this coming weekend. Expect there to be some visitors for that event.

C.J. Smith is off the market

Four-star safety C.J. Smith visited Oklahoma in October and is one of several highly-ranked safeties targeted for the 2018 class. However, Smith took himself off the market on Sunday, officially committing to Nebraska.

The Sooners still have some major safety targets for the 2018 class. However, 4-star Leon O’Neal Jr. is the only one who isn’t currently commited elsewhere.

5-star 2018 CB puts Oklahoma in top 6

While Oklahoma expects to sign its current commits and the majority of its 2018 class in December, there are some targets who are waiting until February.

Five-star cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart announced on Saturday the Sooners made his top six.

The No. 2 cornerback in the 247Sports national composite hasn’t visited Oklahoma. The San Diego native took trips to Texas, Georgia and is scheduled to visit Alabama next weekend. He also has an official visit planned for USC in January. Looks like it will be between the Sooners and Tennessee for that final official visit.

Sooners make the cut for 2019 5-star athlete

Five-star wide receiver Jordan Whittington (Cuero, Texas) announced his top 6 on Sunday. The Sooners were on the list for the No. 26 player in the class per 247Sports.

Whittington took an unofficial visit to Norman for the TCU game on Nov. 11.

Oklahoma remains high on Arjei Henderson’s list

Five-star 2019 WR Arjei Henderson (Richmond, Texas) sent out his top 6 over the weekend. The Sooners remain in the hunt for one of the top receivers in the 2019 class.

Henderson committed to Oklahoma after visiting the campus in April. He then dropped the commitment and announced his pledge to Oregon. He’s since re-opened recruiting.
