Oklahoma players earn major honors; Trevor Knight thinks Baker Mayfield is an all-time great

Baker Mayfield-Oklahoma-Oklahoma Sooners-Oklahoma football

Welcome to the Wednesday edition of our Oklahoma DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through all the biggest headlines around Oklahoma athletics.

Unanimous All-America picks

Oklahoma football came into the year with 32 unanimous All-Americans in program history. Now, the Sooners lead every program with 35 selections after three more Sooners were named unanimous All-Americans in 2016.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield, tackle Orlando Brown and tight end Mark Andrews each earned unanimous All-America honors this season. To earn the mark, a player must be named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press, Walter Camp, FWAA, Sporting News and AFCA.

High praise

Few players know Mayfield’s game better than former Oklahoma starting quarterback Trevor Knight. Mayfield beat Knight out in an open quarterback battle before the 2015 season. However, Knight wasn’t bothered by it.

Knight believes that Mayfield “could possibly be the greatest college quarterback of all time,” he said in an interview with Heartland College Sports. Mayfield still has time to add to his legacy, but it’s tremendous praise from a quarterback who has played against some of the best in the world.

Other headlines from around the program

  • Oklahoma assistant Bill Bedenbaugh was named 2017 offensive line coach of the year by FootballScoop.
  • SB Nation’s NFL mock draft is high on Mayfield. Dan Kadar projects Mayfield to go No. 2 overall to the New York Giants, only behind Josh Rosen to the Cleveland Browns.
  • Count Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver among the players who are unimpressed with Oklahoma’s offensive line. Oliver told The Macon Telegraph’s Jason Butt that a good defense can get to Mayfield because “I don’t think his interior linemen are any good.”

Trae Young impresses

Oklahoma point guard Trae Young was expected to be an elite prospect. The freshman from Norman was a five-star recruit and one of the highest-profile players in the class. No one could have expected he would be this good this quickly.

NBC Sports placed Young right at the top of its player of the year power rankings, far ahead of other luminaries in the sport. Young leads the nation with 28.6 points per game, and also averages 8.8 assists per game. The freshman has a major opportunity to boost his stock even more with a matchup against No. 3 Wichita State on Saturday.
