Oklahoma mailbag: Who is Sooners’ dark horse in NFL draft?

Bobby H. Manning Jr. asks, is there an Oklahoma dark horse, outside of the obvious, who could be drafted?

Six Oklahoma players received invites to the NFL combine. Quarterback Baker Mayfield and tackle Orlando Brown will receive the most scrutiny. They enter the event as likely first-round picks.

Defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and tight end Mark Andrews have the potential to be second-day selections and could raise their stocks with strong performances in Indianapolis.

Fullback Dimitri Flowers likely will turn some heads. Most teams refuse to use anything more than a final-day pick on a fullback. This is a huge week for cornerback Jordan Thomas. Despite losing his starting job late in the season, NFL teams are still interested in him.

The dark horse would be safety Steven Parker. He didn’t have a great season last year, but he is a four-year starter who played in the College Football Playoff twice. It’s surprising he didn’t get a combine invitation.

All of Parker’s hopes ride on the Sooners’ pro day on March 14. If he can run a good 40-yard dash time, that should be enough to get him drafted.

Parker has a chance to do what Jordan Evans did last year. The former Sooners linebacker also didn’t get a combine invite. He put up impressive numbers at his pro day workout and became a sixth-round pick for the Cincinnati Bengals. Parker has that potential.
