With headliners such as Baker Mayfield and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Oklahoma is headed to the College Football Playoff.
The Sooners 12-1 season and Big 12 Championship effort didn’t all come by the hands of upperclass talent, though. For as deep and as talented as Oklahoma is this season, some fresh faces have certainly contributed to the Sooners abundant success in 2017, and as a result, a pair of newcomers were honored as part of 247Sports Freshman All-American team on Wednesday.
CeeDee Lamb – Wide receiver
247Sports Composite rank: No. 148 overall, No. 24 wide receiver
“Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield just became the sixth player in program history to win the Heisman Trophy. A big part of his success in 2017 was freshman wideout CeeDee Lamb. Lamb shredded opposing defenses for 741 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. His breakout performance came against Texas Tech on Oct. 28. The Red Raiders didn’t have an answer for Lamb, who went off for 147 yards and two touchdowns on nine receptions.”
Lamb arrived at Oklahoma as a 4-star freshman and the District 27-5A Overall MVP out of Richmond, Texas after hauling in 2,046
yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior. Of course, his initial success at Oklahoma wasn’t quite as abundant, but his 741 yards
and 7 touchdowns were good for No. 3 and No. 2 on the team, respectively.
Kenneth Murray – Linebacker
247Sports Composite rank: No. 434 overall, No. 23 outside linebacker
“Starting at linebacker for a College Football Playoff team is a pretty nice way to make this cut. Murray played 811 total snaps, so he was clearly ready to produce in Norman. Murray had 59 total tackles, third-most for the Sooners.”
As seen by his No. 434 national ranking, Murray was far from the most coveted talent at his position coming out of high school, but the Houston-area product walked into an ideal situation at Oklahoma that allowed him to play major minutes immediately. A former 3-star prospect, Murray was ranked lower than 19 other members in Oklahoma’s 2017 class, yet emerged as just one of two Sooners to earn 247Sports Freshman All-American honors.
