Oklahoma senior Baker Mayfield is the top player in the country, according to 247Sports’ updated college football player rankings.
The Heisman hopeful took over the top spot previously held by Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. He also surpassed Florida State safety Derwin James and Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver.
Mayfield is on a tear this season. He led Oklahoma to a major road win over Ohio State and picked up one last win against Texas. His numbers are stellar, especially his nation-leading pass efficiency rating.
He has an impressive offensive line to thank, which includes left tackle Orlando Brown. The 6-foot-8, 345-pound lineman checks in at No. 12 on the 247Sports rankings. Outside linebacker Ogbonnia Okoronkwo also made the list at No. 15.
Production, ability, position and data from Pro Football Focus were all considered in constructing the rankings. Mayfield checks out as the best to 247Sports ahead of No. 2 Jackson, No. 3 Bryce Love of Stanford, No. 4 Saquon Barkley of Penn State and No. 5 Bradley Chubb of North Carolina State.
