Ohio State’s win over Penn State named second-best game of 2017 season by ESPN

Ohio State and Penn State had a memorable game on Oct. 28 that was captivating from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. The top-10 battle in Columbus, which the Buckeyes won 39-38, was named the second-best game of the 2017 season by ESPN.

The only regular season game that was better than Ohio State’s comeback win at home according to ESPN’s list was Texas A&M’s huge come-from-behind win over UCLA on the season’s first weekend. The full list of ESPN’s top 20 games of the season can be found here.

Ohio State’s Week 9 matchup with Penn State had all the makings of a big game. The teams entered both ranked in the top six of the AP poll. Conference title and College Football Playoff hopes hung in the balance. And College GameDay was on hand in Columbus.

Saquon Barkley took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. But it was J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes who got the last laugh as they erased an 18-point deficit for the win.

Both the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions harmed their College Football Playoff hopes the following week with losses to Iowa and Michigan State, respectively. But at the time, the game seemed like it was one for the ages.
