Ohio State WR Trevon Grimes in Florida to support sick family member

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State freshman wide receiver Trevon Grimes is currently in Florida to be with a family member battling a health issue.

Urban Meyer confirmed that during his Wednesday night press conference, saying that Grimes is “doing great.” Meyer cancelled his normal Monday press conference on Oct. 9 to visit and support Grimes and his family. Grimes was not dressed out or on the sideline for the Buckeyes’ 62-14 win against Maryland on Oct. 7. No time table was given for Grimes’ return, but Meyer said he’s still on the team.

The week before his absence, Meyer mentioned in a press conference that he tries to stay close with the families of all his players and help in whatever way he can.

“That’s one thing I think is really cool about our program and really cool about the relationship we have with our families,” he said. “We’re on speed dial. We’re not one of those where they have to set an appointment to meet with us. There’s a constant conversation.”

Grimes arrived at Ohio State as a highly touted 4-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas. Despite tearing his ACL during his senior season of high school, Grimes recovered well enough to participate in fall camp and was showing signs of improvement throughout the 2017 season. He totaled three catches for 20 yards. His first catch came in a 38-7 win against Army and he added two more in a 54-21 rout of UNLV.

Just days before the Maryland game, wide receivers coach Zach Smith offered an encouraging view of where things stood with Grimes and his progress on the depth chart.

“He’s still developing,” Smith said. “He’s just working. He’s working. He kind of got slowed down in development because his practices were so modified and limited coming off the ACL [injury]. He didn’t miss training camp, but he missed a lot of stuff in training camp that he couldn’t do yet. His development getting caught up to this level was slower because he couldn’t do a lot of things we needed him to do.”
