Ohio State recruiting: Ohio State in top 2 for Tennessee standout, Texas receiver has Buckeyes roots

Recruiting never stops, and if you take a day off, you fall behind. Join us every night for a daily recap of Ohio State recruiting news, insight on what’s happening behind the scenes and a glimpse at what’s coming next.

Brenton Cox to visit Bama? Is that something Ohio State needs to worry about?

An already contentious recruiting cycle has the potential to even more contentious if you want it to be.

Ohio State verbal Brenton Cox, a 5-star defensive end from Stockbridge. Ga., is expected to visit Alabama this weekend. This trip has been in the works for some time, as the Crimson Tide have been trying for months to get Cox on campus. The trip is an unofficial visit, but the Tide are still trying to arrange an official visit from Cox as well.

Ohio State, for its part, is not worried – which could prevent panic from Buckeyes fans.

“He told [Ohio State] about the visit,” a source told Land of 10. “He’s going to watch a friend from Arkansas play. [The Buckeyes] aren’t worried.”

Of course, it’s Bama, and that’s always a concern. But for now, avoid concerning yourself too much about that.

Buckeyes in Top 2 for Tennessee 2019 prospect Bill Norton

Ohio State hosted Memphis (Tenn.) Christian Brothers two-way lineman Bill Norton a week ago for the game vs. Maryland, and Norton left campus with a much-desired offer.

“It was definitely one I was looking for,” Norton told Land of 10 about the offer. “I went, just expecting to enjoy the gameday experience. So when they offered, I was very surprised.”

Norton said the Buckeyes are one of the top schools on his list.

“I love Ohio State, but I also have interest in Georgia,” Norton said. “Those are top as of now. I love the way that Ohio State doesn’t only prepare you for football, but also for life after. How they bring people in to talk to the players about job opportunities. The coaches all care about the players and want to help them succeed in all ways.

“Everything Columbus is all about Ohio State. It’s amazing.”

This most recent visit to Ohio State was his second trip; he also visited in July for Friday Night Lights. Norton has eight offers, with some schools recruiting him as a defensive end and some preferring to recruit his 6-foot-6, 270-pound frame as an offensive lineman. Georgia is among those who see him as an offensive line prospect.

“[Ohio State] doesn’t know what they’re offering me as,” Norton said. “Either an offensive tackle or defensive end, but I’ll just have to see how it plays out. I prefer playing defensive end. I went to the Friday Night Lights camp in the summer and I guess I showed them that I can move well for my size.”

Ohio State roots for a Top 20 player in Texas

Texas’ 19th-ranked player in the Class of 2019, Garrett Wilson, is an Ohio native.

“I’m from Dublin, Ohio,” Wilson told Land of 10. “I moved to Austin in seventh grade. I grew up going to all the Terrelle Pryor and Braxton Miller games. I’ve always loved the Buckeyes.”

The Buckeyes have not been in touch personally, but they have been in contact.

“They’ve sent me some mail,” said the 6-foot, 180-pound receiver at Lake Travis High School. “Some follows on Twitter.”

Though he’s not heard from Ohio State, Wilson is becoming a highly sought-after prospect. He has 16 offers, including from Florida State, Arkansas and Indiana. Still, there’s no doubt that the Buckeyes are his “dream” school.

“I’ve got offers from TCU, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, Texas Tech, Baylor, some others,” he said. “I’ve just visited TCU so far, but Florida State, TCU, Houston, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Arkansas are some of the ones sticking out right now.

“Growing up in Columbus and having two brothers that played high school football there, that dreamed of getting an offer from Ohio State, but never did? It’s definitely a dream of mine if they’d want me to play for them.”

Psstt…

I’m not going to be working the Nebraska game this weekend and will be on vacation next week during the Ohio State off week.

If something crazy happens on the recruiting trail, I’m sure I’ll be talking to you about it. But in the meantime, Ryan Ginn will be doing some recruiting coverage in my stead.

Have a great week, everyone!
