Recruiting never stops, and if you take a day off, you fall behind. Join us every night for a daily recap of Ohio State recruiting news, insight on what’s happening behind the scenes and a glimpse at what’s coming next.
Tommy Togiai bolsters stellar DT class
Ohio State already had an elite group of defensive tackles coming in the 2018 class, with 5-star prospect Taron Vincent and 4-star JUCO transfer Antwuan Jackson both firmly locked in. But the addition of Pocatello (Idaho) Highland 4-star Tommy Togiai on Tuesday night was a huge addition for a few reasons.
First, he happens to be real good. He’s the No. 9 defensive tackle and No. 126 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite. At 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, he has great size, and there’s elite athleticism to go along with it. His offer list — though mostly regional, as SEC schools didn’t even bother trying — is also a good sign: Arizona State, Boise State, BYU, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State and Wisconsin.
It’s also a sign of good things in regard to Ohio State being able to swat away rumors of defensive line coach Larry Johnson’s impending retirement. The commitment came during an in-home visit with Johnson and coach Urban Meyer, so the topic almost certainly came up. And without a satisfactory explanation, is there any commitment coming? Unlikely. It remains to be seen if defensive ends such as Jayson Oweh and Tyreke Smith will feel similarly, but Togiai’s commitment showed it’s possible to counteract those concerns.
Lastly, it’s just a good sign for the program that in the midst of a relative downturn in recruiting, the Buckeyes can still go into Idaho and steal a top player from Pac-12 powers. That’s something almost no other team in the country can do.
Kamryn Babb gives Ohio State another weapon
About an hour before landing Togiai, Ohio State pulled in St. Louis Christian Brothers 4-star wide receiver Kamryn Babb, the No. 12 wideout and No. 65 overall prospect in the Class of 2018.
What are the Buckeyes getting? Babb is exactly the type of player they need at wideout. Ohio State has too often in the past used track stars at wide receiver, and while Babb is certainly an athlete he’s also a true wide receiver with a great pair of hands.
The one concern is the fact that he missed five games in 2016 with an unspecified injury and then tore his ACL before the start of his senior season. However, Ohio State has had pretty good success with players bouncing back from senior-year ACL tears as Dre’Mont Jones, Nick Bosa and Trevon Grimes have not have any injuries since their own ACL tears in their final year of high school.
It also doesn’t hurt that the Buckeyes recently hosted Babb’s high school teammate Cameron Brown, who seems like a likely candidate to flip from Nebraska.
Jaiden Woodbey offered by Florida State
Ohio State 5-star safety commit Jaiden Woodbey responded Tuesday afternoon to a Florida State fan’s suggestion that he play for FSU by saying the Seminoles had never offered him.
You probably can guess what happened next.

Later that night, Woodbey posted a tweet saying he just wants to be another version of Jalen Ramsey… the former Florida State defensive back and No. 5 overall NFL draft pick in 2016.
What does it mean going forward? Adam Gorney of Rivals.com caught up with Woodbey to ask him.
“We’ll see because it’s kind of late, but it has been a dream school for me so I have to talk it over with my parents,” Woodbey said.
Logically, this isn’t an offer that should worry Buckeyes fans. Woodbey, who lives in California, has been committed to the Buckeyes for nearly a full year, and those relationships don’t get thrown away for a school with which he’s not had previous contact. The upcoming weekend is the last chance for official visits before the dead period, and Woodbey is planning to enroll early.
Woodbey showing interest in a school that’s put in the time to recruit him, and wasn’t located across the country, would be reason for concern, but until this develops further there’s no need to lose sleep over it.
Just wait till signing day we not done #S1LVER8ULLETS
