Ohio State-Penn State basketball preview
No. 8 Ohio State (22-5) has won four games in a row, with its last loss coming to Penn State (18-9) on Jan. 25. The Buckeyes have since gotten back on the right path, including a big 64-63 win over Purdue on on Feb. 7. Forward Keita Bates-Diop rebounded a missed layup and put it back with 2.8 seconds left to seal the win.
Ohio State most recently beat Iowa, 82-64, on Feb. 10, with five Buckeyes players scoring in double-figures. Forward Kaleb Wesson led the way with 18 points, and guard C.J. Jackson and forward Keita Bates-Diop chipped in with 14 points each. The Buckeyes were leading 42-32 at the half and never looked back.
When Ohio State and Penn State played earlier in the season, Nittany Lions guard Tony Carr hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Penn State the upset win. Ohio State, which suffered its first Big Ten loss of the season, was led by Bates-Diop’s 25 points. He was in foul trouble for much of the second half, however, paving the way for Carr’s last-second prayer that gave the Nittany Lions the win. Carr finished with a game-high 28 points on 10-for-14 shooting.
Penn State enters the game on a three-game winning steak, having lost to Michigan State, 76-68, on Jan. 31. The Nittany Lions also nearly fell to Maryland on Jan. 7, before pulling out an 74-70 win. They blew out Illinois on Sunday in a 74-52 win, during which five Penn State players scored in double-figures. Guard Shep Garner scored a team-high 16 points, in addition to recording four assists and two rebounds.
The game will mark the beginning of a daunting four-game stretch for Penn State, which will have to play No. 6 Purdue three days after Ohio State. Then the Nittany Lions host No. 22 Michigan on Feb. 21 before closing out the regular season at Nebraska on Feb. 25.
Ohio State plays at Michigan on Feb. 18, but from there it finishes out the season against weaker opponents in Rutgers and Indiana.
