Ohio State football: Urban Meyer absence explained; 4-star WR target has Buckeyes at top

Ohio State football is the No. 1 topic in Wake Up Sloopy every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Urban Meyer supports a player

When it was announced Sunday night that Urban Meyer wouldn’t have his customary Monday press conference, the questions naturally began to come. After all, Meyer had never previously missed an in-season Monday media session during his time at Ohio State.

However, it came to light Monday that he had a pretty good reason. A team spokesman told Land of 10 that Meyer missed the game to be with a player (who was not named for privacy reasons) and his family. One of the player’s family members is dealing with an unspecified health issue.

Tennessee WR Lance Wilhoite likes Ohio State

While it finishes up the current recruiting class, Ohio State is already making inroads with players in the Class of 2019.

Franklin, Tenn., 4-star wide receiver Lance Wilhoite visited Columbus for the Buckeyes’ game against Maryland and came away impressed with what he saw. The Buckeyes are currently at the top of his list.

“It was great,” Wilhoite told Land of 10. “It was electric. Ohio State fans and the community is second to none so far from all the schools I’ve been to. The atmosphere is crazy.”

Ohio State No. 1 in S&P+

Ohio State may have a loss, but the Buckeyes are No. 1 in the latest analytics-based S&P+ rankings done by Bill Connelly. Advanced metrics appear to favor the way the Buckeyes have laid waste to everyone in their path recently while also not punishing them for the Oklahoma loss.

“Their only loss was to Oklahoma,” Connelly said. “Oklahoma’s still eighth. It always looks weird when you have a team with a blemish ahead of a bunch of team that don’t have one. But in terms of dominance, that’s how dominant Ohio State has been. And if it’s kind of a false thing where they can’t do that against top-10 teams, then we’ll find out soon enough.”
