Ohio State football: Buckeyes hold steady in Land of 10 Power Poll

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football remained second behind Penn State in the latest edition of the Land of 10 Power Poll released Sunday.

That means it will be a power poll No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup when the Nittany Lions visit the Buckeyes on Saturday in Columbus. The Buckeyes are coming off a bye week, and Penn State picked up a huge home win against Michigan.

Here is the full poll from the latest vote:

Week 8 Land of 10 Power Poll vote totals

1. Penn State (13 first-place votes) … 169
2. Ohio State … 154
3. Wisconsin … 145
4. Michigan State … 140
5. Michigan … 114
6. Northwestern … 100
7. Iowa … 90
8. Indiana … 72
9. Maryland … 59
10. Minnesota … 47
11. Nebraska … 46
12. Rutgers … 30
13. Purdue … 25
14. Illinois … 2

How I voted

Well, that is certainly one way for Penn State to secure its No. 1 spot ahead of the huge matchup against Ohio State. The Nittany Lions have been impressive but not overly so until that 42-13 thrashing they put on Michigan on Saturday.

Wisconsin proved yet again that it would be a third-place team at best in the Big Ten East. Beating Maryland 38-13 is fine, but it’s also probably a sign a beating is coming the Badgers’ way in the Big Ten Championship Game. Ohio State tore apart Maryland 62-14 a few weeks earlier, and Penn State likely will do the same in the regular-season finale. If AP Top 25 voters want to put Wisconsin fifth, though, so be it.

Indiana might be 0-4 in the Big Ten, but if you can’t look at those scores against Michigan and Michigan State and see how close the Hoosiers are to those teams, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s simply bad luck they had to play four of the top 5 teams in the division this early.

I know I’ll look bad for having Purdue above Rutgers, but that’s the way polls work this time of year. Putting Purdue behind Rutgers means that Minnesota would go ahead of the Boilermakers, who beat them. It’s pretty much impossible to make a perfect head-to-head results ballot, and Purdue has been better overall this season than Rutgers.

Illinois is still bad.

Here is my full ballot for Week 8:

1. Penn State
2. Ohio State
3. Wisconsin
4. Michigan State
5. Michigan
6. Indiana
7. Northwestern
8. Iowa
9. Maryland
10. Nebraska
11. Purdue
12. Minnesota
13. Rutgers
14. Illinois
