Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann named Big Ten Coach of the Year

Chris Holtmann greatly surpassed expectations in his first season at Ohio State. It earned him the top honor for coaches in his league.

Holtmann was named the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year for the 2017-18 season Monday evening. After taking over for Thad Matta in June, Holtmann guided the No. 13 Buckeyes to a 24-7 record and a 15-3 mark in the Big Ten.

“It’s been remarkable. It’s really been a remarkable experience for all of us to go through the Big Ten regular season,” Holtmann told the Big Ten Network. “Certainly unexpected, but I’m continually reminded how special our upperclassmen are.”

This is Holtmann’s third conference Coach of the Year accolade during his career. He won the Big South Coach of the Year award in 2013 while he was with Gardner-Webb, and Holtmann was the Big East Coach of the Year with Butler last season. Holtmann is also a nominee for the Naismith national Coach of the Year honor this season.

Holtmann will put Ohio State into the NCAA Tournament this season for the first time in three years, and he guided the Buckeyes to their highest win total in conference play since the 2010-11 campaign. His team was aided greatly by Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State’s star forward who was named the conference’s Player of the Year on Monday.
