Notre Dame-USC preview

The Fighting Irish appear to have put a Week 2 defeat to Georgia and a disappointing 4-8 record from a season ago behind them as they have won their last four. The Irish’s loss does not look as bad now as it did at the time with Georgia having skyrocketed to No. 3 in the AP Poll. As a result, the country’s No. 13 team can boost its playoff hopes with a victory against No. 11 USC at Notre Dame Stadium.

Josh Adams has been a key to Notre Dame’s success this year. The junior currently sits at 776 yards and 5 touchdowns on 86 carries, a 9.0 yards per carry average. Last Saturday against North Carolina, he rushed 13 times for 118 yards and a touchdown as the Irish defeated the Tar Heels 33-10. Adams had help last week as sophomore Deon McIntosh enjoyed a career day, scoring 2 touchdowns as part of a 12-carry, 124-yard performance. Thanks to top-notch play for its offensive line, namely from All-Americans Mike McGlinchey and Quenton Nelson, the running attack has stood out for Notre Dame thus far this season.

USC, of course, features one of the country’s top quarterback prospects in Sam Darnold. Darnold was 27 for 50 in a 28-27 win against Utah last week, throwing 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Overall, the redshirt sophomore is 163 for 200 passing on the year thus far, throwing for 2,063 yards, 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. This game will certainly represent a unique challenge for the Irish secondary as they try to limit the production of a player that could have his name called early in the NFL Draft come spring.

If the Irish are able to take care of business against the Trojans, it could move very close to the top 10 heading into another tough matchup against No. 16 NC State at home. A victory in that one would give Notre Dame a big boost ahead of the College Football Playoff’s initial rankings on October 31. The Irish, though, have no room for error if they are to find themselves in a New Year’s Six bowl or, perhaps, a top four spot when the season ends. They would have to likely run the table to at least have a chance to impress the playoff committee. On the other side of the coin, a win over USC would effectively end any hopes of a playoff slot for the Trojans with two losses on their ledger.

Last year at the LA Coliseum, USC beat Notre Dame 45-27. Adoree’ Jackson was the star in that one, scoring 3 touchdowns (one on a punt return, one on a 52-yard pass by Sam Darnold, and the third on a 97-yard kickoff return). The game as a whole featured 820 yards of total offense.

The Irish lead the all-time series 44-36-5. USC won last year’s edition by a count of 45-27 at the LA Coliseum. The Trojans won five of six matchups from 2006-2011, but the Irish have won three of the last five since.
