Notre Dame has jumped in the race for one of the best defensive players in the Class of 2019.

Five-star linebacker Nakobe Dean, who is ranked as the No. 1 inside linebacker and No. 22 overall player in the country, according to 247Sports.com, announced Friday that he received a scholarship offer from the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame is the 20th team to offer Dean, adding their name to a list that includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida and in-state schools Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker has already had two unofficial visits with Ole Miss and one with Alabama and Auburn. He also attended camps at Ole Miss and Alabama.

Dean is an instinctual defender who excels in both run defense and coverage. The rising senior registered 147 tackles, 25 for loss, and nine sacks this fall for Horn Lake (Miss.) High School.

He does not feature elite linebacker speed, running a 4.74 40-yard dash, but he makes up for it with terrific lateral quickness, as evidenced by his 4.38 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

Dean would be the first five-star linebacker to choose Notre Dame since former All-American Jaylon Smith signed back in 2013.
