When Notre Dame takes on LSU in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day, LSU quarterback Danny Etling will find himself in an unusual position: playing to beat the team he grew up supporting.
Etling told reporters Wednesday that growing up in Terre Haute, Indiana, he cheered for the Fighting Irish, mainly because his mother was a “huge” Notre Dame fan. Etling even said he had a green Joe Montana jersey. His favorite Notre Dame player growing up? Brady Quinn.
“Not too many people would assume that Catholic kid that grew up in Indiana would be playing for LSU and not Notre Dame in this game,” Etling said.

This won’t be the first time Etling faces his childhood team. As a sophomore at Purdue in 2014, Etling started against Notre Dame in Week 3. He completed 27 of 40 passes for 234 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The Irish won 30-14.
This time around, Etling will certainly have a more talented supporting cast. He’ll hope for a different outcome as well — even though he grew up rooting for the Irish.
