Notre Dame football signed several big-time recruits during the first National Signing Day in December and then rounded out the class with great depth last week. But Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea made it no secret which player was his favorite ‘get.’
Actually, Lea said the 4-star linebacker the Irish landed from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ is already ‘one of my favorite’ players ever.
“Shayne, on so many levels, Shayne is one of my favorites of all-time,” said Lea according to Irish Illustrated. “His family, his background, his demeanor, his skill-set. We’re thrilled to have him. That Rover is a big safety. So, to see him do what he’s done and on offense, too, catching the ball, catch and run, making plays, he’s a talented athlete. The thing that I loved about Shayne, too, is that he came and camped with us. Through it all, he wanted to know how I coached, and he wanted to show me how he competed. That was the icing on the cake.”
That’s high praise for a kid that hasn’t even practiced yet with the Irish.
In high school, Simon dominated on both sides of the ball. He record 108 total tackles, including 23.0 for loss, 6.0 sacks and 9 interceptions during his junior and senior seasons combined. On offense, he posted 1,431 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns as a senior.
Clearly, Lea is excited he chose to play his college football at Notre Dame.
