Lavar Ball continued to make headlines in recent weeks by announcing that he was taking his two youngest sons, Liangelo and LaMelo, to Europe to play basketball professionally. The two younger brothers of Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball then signed with the Lithuanian team Prienu Vytautas.
Thursday, Notre Dame senior center Martinas Geben, a native of Lithuania, was asked by reporters about the brothers’ move to his home country. Geben said he was stunned when he heard the news.
“At first I heard the rumors of them talking to a different team in Lithuania, so totally unexpected,” Geben said, according to Stephen Brooks of the South Bend Tribune. “As everybody saw, Twitter blew up. I think it’ll be interesting to follow them and see what happens with them in Lithuania.”
As for Liangelo and LaMelo’s adjustment to life in Lithuania, Geben, who played with several members of Prienu Vytautas as a member of Lithuania’s team at the World University Games, said he doesn’t see the family fitting in.
“It’s a complete mismatch,” he said. “They’re going from a sunny Southern California to a cold, cloudy Lithuania in the middle of the winter. It’s definitely going to be a culture shock as far as food, language and basketball.
“But I’m excited to see what happens with them and how they handle it.”
