The Notre Dame Fighting Irish has continued to gain momentum this week, as talk about the College Football Playoffs has heated up.
The committee will announce the first official College Football Playoff rankings on Oct. 31 this year, but CBS Sports released an early preview on Tuesday. Notre Dame is firmly in the race at No. 10.
Notre Dame’s win at Michigan State looks a lot better now than a week ago. Its loss to Georgia looks better every week also.
The Fighting Irish beat the Spartans by 20 in East Lansing a couple weeks ago, and at the time, it was a bit of a ho-hum victory. But with Michigan State beating Michigan at The Big House this past Saturday, the Spartans moved up into the Top 25, meaning that victory is a much stronger one for Notre Dame.
Their only loss to date was to Georgia at home, but the Irish fell to the Bulldogs by just a point. Since then, Georgia has rolled through its SEC competition, blowing out Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The better Georgia does, the better Notre Dame will look if the committee starts comparing losses.
Joining Notre Dame in the Top 12 were three ACC schools, one of which the Irish will play in a few weeks. Clemson rolled in at No. 1 in the early College Football Playoffs rankings just ahead of Alabama. Miami and Virginia Tech were ranked 11th and 12th, respectively.
