Read his daily notebooks here at 9 a.m. ET Monday through Friday. In this edition, we discuss where two of North Carolina’s top targets — 2018 power forward E.J. Montgomery and 2019 power forward Vernon Carey Jr. — will be headed next.

5-star power forward E.J. Montgomery sets visit to Kentucky

Monday was a solid day for the North Carolina basketball program.

The Tar Heels easily handled Notre Dame, and they also hosted 5-star Class of 2018 power forward E.J. Montgomery, the only player left on Roy Williams’ reconfigured board for the class after missing on Zion Williamson in January.

Montgomery scheduled the visit to Chapel Hill last week in conjunction with a visit that the Wheeler High School (Marietta, Ga.) star will take to Duke later this week.

According to 247Sports’ Evan Daniels, those aren’t the only two visits on Montgomery has on his docket, either. On Sunday, Daniels reported that Montgomery has scheduled a visit to Kentucky for Feb. 24 as confirmed by his father E.J. Montgomery Sr. This comes after Kentucky coach John Calipari visited Montgomery last week, according to Daniels.

It’s no surprise to see that the Wildcats are involved, as they also struck out on Williamson. It’s also no surprise to see Duke involved, and it’s hard to imagine anyone beating the Blue Devils, given their recruiting momentum after constructing a class with four top 10 prospects. The 247Sports Crystal Ball agrees.

All of these visits have been unofficial, so far. Montgomery is down to 11 campuses on his list of preferred schools, and he likely will try to visit as many as possible before he decides which programs will get his five official visits. Montgomery could head to all three campuses again before he makes his decision.

Montgomery, a former Auburn commit who de-committed in the wake of the FBI investigation into college basketball recruiting, ranks as the No. 12 overall player and No. 3 power forward in the Class of 2018.

5-star PF Vernon Carey Jr. heading to Miami

Montgomery isn’t the only top Tar Heels target to announce a visit to another school in the last few days.

Vernon Carey Jr., the No. 2 overall player in the Class of 2019, tweeted Monday night that he’ll be visiting Miami on Tuesday.

The visit appears to be unofficial in nature. Carey (University School/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) took his first official visit to Michigan State over the weekend, which seemingly indicates that he’s inching closer to narrowing down his list to five schools.

North Carolina should expect to make that cut, although nothing is set. Williams has visited Carey twice since the end of December, including a visit just over a week ago.

Duke also is in the mix and appears to be the favorite to land Carey, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
