North Carolina-Notre Dame basketball preview

North Carolina found out Sunday that the NCAA Selection Committee views them as a three-seed and the No. 12 team in the country a month away from Selection Sunday. The Tar Heels are more than pleased with that considering two weeks ago they were in the midst of a three-game losing streak.

Victories over No. 9 Duke and North Carolina State have made that rough patch an afterthought, though, as it appears UNC has regained its national championship form from a year ago.

Notre Dame is in the exact opposite situation.

The Fighting Irish, a NCAA tournament team from a year ago, have looked lost without Bonzie Colson, who suffered a broken foot back in January, and have lost seven of their last nine games. They do, however, enter Monday’s game on a two-game winning streak after victories over Boston College and Florida State.

Notre Dame’s postseason hopes look bleak, but they can still hold out hope thanks to their remaining regular season schedule. This matchup is the first of three must-win games for the Fighting Irish to bolster their resume. They also play No. 25 Miami on Feb. 19 and end their season on March 3 against No. 2 Virginia, which the Selection Committee deems as the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament thus far.

To claim their first upset, the Fighting Irish will need to shoot better than the 34.8 percent in their first game versus North Carolina — a 69-68 loss back on Jan. 13. Sophomore guard TJ Gibbs, who averages 16.3 points per game this season, scored a team-high 19 in that game, but only made six of his 20 shot attempts.

Forwards Theo Pinson and Luke May and guard Joel Berry all scored in double figures for the Tar Heels, combining for 36 points on 17-for-32 shooting in the first meeting.
