NFL scout says people picking Baker Mayfield to go No. 1 overall ‘are off their rocker’

Baker Mayfield’s draft stock appears to be rising, but an anonymous NFL scout is pushing back against any talk that he should be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller asked some NFL scouts and executives who they thought the most overrated player in the draft is. One scout said Mayfield, not because he thinks the Oklahoma quarterback is bad, but because he disagrees with the idea that Mayfield should be considered for the first overall pick.

“I like Baker,” the scout said. “We like Baker. But fans wanting him drafted first overall are off their rocker. I do think he’ll go top 10 because he’s a quarterback.”

Some analysts and media members have begun promoting Mayfield as the top quarterback available this year and a likely pick for the Cleveland Browns at No. 1. This scout appears to think that hype is overblown, even though he still expects Mayfield is an early first-rounder.

Mayfield has proven to be a divisive prospect. Some talent evaluators have concerns about his character and have compared him to Johnny Manziel. However, others have touted him as a potential franchise quarterback.

The Heisman winner’s draft stock should become more obvious as the evaluation process continues. The NFL Scouting Combine begins the last week of February, and Oklahoma will hold its Pro Day on March 14.
