NFL mock draft 2018: How Saquon Barkley could drop to No. 7

Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is the oddsmakers’ favorite to go No. 1 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, but that does not mean it is a forgone conclusion.

Bleacher Report has Barkley going second to the New York Giants. NFL.com has him as the No. 3 pick to the Indianapolis Colts.

But if the Giants pass on Barkley and the Colts trade down, CBS Sports Senior Writer Will Brinson states in his latest mock draft, Barkley could slip outside of the top five. In that case, Brinson thinks Barkley will slide all the way to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 7.

Brinson further explains his reasoning below:

This feels crazy. Barkley’s considered a potential top pick in this draft. But if the Colts trade down and the Giants don’t take him, he could fall. The Buccaneers cut Doug Martin and might swoop on this.”

In Brinson’s mock draft, the Giants will fill one of their main needs by drafting Notre Dame offensive lineman Quenton Nelson. The Buffalo Bills will then trade up, take the Colts’ No. 3 pick and draft USC quarterback Sam Darnold. That leaves the Colts with the No. 14 pick, and by that point, Barkley will already be off the board.

Obviously a lot has to happen for this scenario to occur, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

And with the NFL draft still more than a month away, the speculation will likely only continue to grow.
