Newly offered DB says he’d ‘love to go’ to LSU

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Eye on the Tigers, a rundown of everything happening in LSU Tigers recruiting , with Sam Spiegelman. Today, we discuss Elias Ricks, the newest defensive back to pull in an offer from LSU after making a visit to Baton Rouge last weekend.

Elias Ricks talks new LSU offer

SULPHUR, La. — Elias Ricks made the most of his first weekend in The Boot.

The Class of 2020 4-star defensive back squeezed in not one, but two, unofficial visits to LSU. In between, proved to be one of the top performers at the annual SPE Camp in Sulphur, La.

While in Baton Rouge on Saturday, Ricks and his parents spent one-on-one time with coach Ed Orgeron, who extended the elite California prospect an offer.

“I was really excited,” Ricks told SEC Country. “They put out a lot of top defensive backs, so it’s amazing to get an offer from them. You know that LSU has put out a lot of the top defensive backs, so I would love to go there. It would be a great opportunity. I would really love going there and they’re going to be one of my top schools for sure.

“At LSU, I was kind of getting ready for it [the offer]. I was thinking for the best and I was still so excited to get the offer from such a prestigious school like that, so yeah, I like the offer.”

The Tigers officially joined the race with Florida, Oregon and Arizona for the 6-foot-2, 185-pound defensive back who can play both cornerback or safety at the next level.

How did LSU separate itself from the pack?

Orgeron spent a lot of time conversing with the 4-star prospect and his family, then gave a guided tour of the campus before informing Ricks of the offer.

“I visited the school in the morning,” he began. “It was a quick visit, but it was cool, though. We saw the weight room, some things on the academic side, all of the players they put out and the facilities, so that was good. Coach O said that he had just seen my film, that he really liked me and just offered me. Then, he was talking to my parents and said he’d love to have me there, so this was really important.”

Ricks made a return trip to LSU on Super Bowl Sunday, this time getting the opportunity to familiarize himself with defensive backs coach Corey Raymond and take a closer look at the campus.

“I wanted to see the rest of the school and have conversations with the whole coaching staff. Also, seeing what it’s just like over there and how is life outside of football,” he said.

Ricks has no timeline for giving a commitment, especially as offers — like the one from LSU — continue to roll in.

The Mater Dei (Calif.) product is a top-110 prospect in the 2020 class and ranked No. 12 inside California. Currently, he’s projected as a safety.

As far his thoughts on the recruiting process so far, Ricks had this to say:

“It’s going to be a hard decision, so I’ll eventually have to narrow it down.”
