New York Times: Heisman Trophy is literally manufactured in Oklahoma

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to capture the program’s sixth Heisman Trophy on Saturday in New York.

If he does, Mayfield will take home a trophy produced just a half-hour drive north of the University of Oklahoma campus.

The New York Times’ Marc Tracy detailed the company, MTM Recognition, that manufactures the Heisman Trophy and its process.

MTM Recognition has sculpted the coveted bronze trophy since 2005. The company is also responsible for making the new Big 12 championship trophy, which the Sooners won on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Mayfield would join Sam Bradford in bringing the trophy made in the Sooner State back to the Oklahoma City metro for second time in nine years.

Mayfield would also join the Sooners’ five-man Heisman Trophy winner club that includes Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White and Bradford.

He will have to beat out 2016 winner Lamar Jackson and Stanford’s Bryce Love for the award on Saturday at Playstation Theater.
