New York columnist calls Nick Saban a ‘clueless, gutless, selfish coward’

Don’t you just love it when a New York newspaper decides it knows what’s best for Alabama’s football coach? And don’t you just hate when people try to bring politics into football?

We’re dealing with both here, so buckle up.

Nick Saban found his name in an extremely nasty headline published by the New York Daily News on Thursday morning. In an article titled “Nick Saban is a clueless, gutless, selfish coward for his silence on Roy Moore,” Daily News writer Chuck Modiano calls out Saban for his perceived “silence” during Alabama’s recent U.S. Senate race that concluded with an election on Tuesday evening.

And just in case you were wondering if it was the case of a copy editor choosing a salacious headline for a story that doesn’t reflect that sentiment, Modiano cleared that up right from the beginning his story by opening with this:

The words in this title to describe Alabama head coach Nick Saban are not hyperbole.

They are written precisely as intended when America’s highest paid public employee of great mass influence can’t render public opinion on Roy Moore.

Saban, who saw his name pulled into the political fray on election day when news cameras chased down Alabama voters who chose to write the Crimson Tide coach’s name in on their ballot rather than choose between the two primary candidates, rarely gives any thoughts about non-football related topics. And given the influence of his position and nature of his responsibilities, some may see that as a wise move.

The premise of the article was that Saban’s salary as a football coach (more than $11 million annually) somehow made him responsible for speaking on a very contentious campaign between Roy Moore and Doug Jones. On Tuesday, Jones won the closely contested election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

At one point, Modiano recklessly threw this line out about Saban in the column:

By remaining silent on the numerous allegations that Moore was a pedophile, Saban showed he does not care about the plight or protection of young women and girls.

No matter what your political leanings are or your opinion on which candidate should have won this election, it’s pretty easy to see that Modiano is over the line and out of bounds with his words about a man who has done nothing to warrant this attack on his character.

Saban, who famously expressed his lack of attention to anything but football during last year’s Presidential election cycle, is likely to let this one roll right off his back. After all, the Crimson Tide has a rematch with No. 1-ranked Clemson in the College Football Playoff on Dec. 31.
