Nebraska WR JD Spielman named to USA Today Freshman All-American team

Nebraska freshman JD Spielman was honored for his tremendous season on Tuesday, as the wide receiver was named to the 2017 USA Today Freshman All-American Team.

Spielman set Nebraska freshman records in catches (55), receiving yards, (830) and all-purpose yards (1,572). He added 669 yards on kickoff returns, and his 1,572 all-purpose yards was tops on the team. He also set the school record for most receiving yards in a single game, as he racked up 200 yards against Ohio State on Oct. 14. This was also the most receiving yards by a freshman in a game this season.

The redshirt freshman from Eden Prairie, Minn. averaged 17.1 yards every time he touched the ball. In addition, Spielman averaged 75.5 receiving yards per game to lead all freshmen nationally.

Among all freshman in the country, Spielman ranked second in receptions per game (5.0) and all-purpose yards per game (142.9).

Stanley Morgan Jr. named first-team All-Big Ten performer

Along with Spielman, junior wide receiver while Stanley Morgan Jr. was named a first-team All-Big Ten performer by Phil Steele.

Morgan lead the team with 61 receptions and 986 receiving yards, the latter of which is a new Nebraska single-season record, passing 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers’ previous mark.

Morgan also had 10 receiving touchdowns, which led the Big Ten. He also led the Big Ten in receiving yards per game (89.6).
