Andre Hunt has big goals for career at Nebraska

We already have written about how 3-star wide receiver signee Andre Hunt fits into Nebraska’s scheme. But it’s apparently Andre Hunt Day at Land of 10 Nebraska, as now we turn our attention to how Hunt realized Nebraska was his best fit, along with what he wants to accomplish in a Huskers uniform.

Hunt knew he wanted to attend Nebraska on the final morning of his official visit following a conversation with athletic director Bill Moos.

“He really fired me up,” Hunt told Land of 10. “I told my Dad right after I talked to him. I was like ‘I want to come here.’ Because if the AD is in full effect with the coaches and the whole football staff, we’re going to have success. That’s what I want.”

As for his goals at Nebraska?

“I want to win a championship wherever I go,” Hunt said. “That’s what I’ll set my mind to.”

Hunt committed before he left his official visit, but did not announce until a televised Signing Day ceremony. The 72-hour period during which he had to keep his decision private was especially difficult.

“I was really anxious to tell the Nebraska fan base that I’m coming to be a Husker,” Hunt said. “[I’m] excited to start my training, play [Big Ten] teams next year and my whole career. I was really ready to go ahead and tell them that.”

Adrian Martinez, a fellow California native, hosted Hunt during the weekend. It seems like the two got along well.

“He’s a great dude, very mature guy,” Hunt said of Martinez. “That’s what we need in a quarterback. That’s what everybody needs at quarterback, actually. He’s all about the football aspect, but he can have fun. I like the dude. I think me and him will have great chemistry when I get there.”

Hunt’s primary recruiter, offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Troy Walters, spent a lot of time with Hunt and his parents during the visit. But Hunt noticed how excited the staff seemed to be in Lincoln.

“I think they’re very anxious to get things started and show what Nebraska could really be,” Hunt said. “But they seem very comfortable and just ready to get it going.”

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Hunt was the No. 96 receiver and No. 566 overall prospect in the class.

Interesting note between Caleb Tannor and Javontae Jean-Baptiste

I spoke with Caleb Tannor’s high school coach, Justin Larmond, who always gives candid responses and takes you behind the curtain of Tannor’s recruitment. I asked him how much they were taking into account fellow 4-star outside linebacker Javontae Jean-Baptiste’s decision. Larmond said that Tannor’s decision was independent from that of Jean-Baptiste’s, at least from the Tannor camp’s perspective. After trending toward the Huskers for weeks, Jean-Baptiste signed with Ohio State.

Obviously, both would have been takes for the Huskers. Tannor actually committed to the staff a little less than a week before National Signing Day. Jean-Baptiste was still deciding and used another official visit that weekend to Texas A&M. But Larmond said he wished Jean-Baptiste would have picked Nebraska, for reasons as a coach and as a new Huskers fan. The coach in him wanted Jean-Baptiste in Lincoln to push Tannor on the field, and the fan in him wanted to see the defense bring in a pair of pass rushers.

“We didn’t know where that kid [Jean-Baptiste] was going,” Larmond said. “I looked at his film, I thought he was a really good player. I thought it would have been good for competition and bringing the best out of Caleb.”

Check out Land of 10 on Wednesday for a story on just how Nebraska beat out Florida and Auburn for Tannor.
