Nebraska-Penn State basketball preview

Nebraska (21-9, 12-5 Big Ten) and Penn State (19-11, 9-8 Big Ten) meet for the 17th time in series history on Sunday. The Nittany Lions currently hold a 9-7 advantage over the Huskers in the all-time series. However, Nebraska is only trailing 6-7 against Penn State since joining the Big Ten.

Prior to joining the Big Ten, Nebraska only faced the Nittany Lions three times. That included a home-and-home series in 1980 and 1981, as well as a meeting in the second round of the 1995 NIT. The Huskers are currently 6-1 in Lincoln against Penn State.

Nebraska faces Penn State on Sunday, which also happens to be the Huskers’ senior day. Seniors Anton Gill, Malcolm Laws, Duby Okeke and Evan Taylor, along with senior managers Mitchell Lofgren and Nick Pohlen, will be honored prior to the matchup with the Nittany Lions. Fans interested in seeing the senior day ceremony are encouraged to be in their seats by 4:50 p.m. ET.

The Huskers come into the matchup against Penn State after a 66-57 win over Indiana on Tuesday. Nebraska’s second-half performance was a big factor in getting the 12th conference win of the season. The Huskers utilized a 10-run to take the lead for good in the second half, which ultimately sealed the deal down the stretch.

A victory Sunday would break a school record for Nebraska for most conference wins in a season. The 2017-18 Nebraska team would join the 1965-66 (Big Eight) and 1915-16 (Missouri Valley) squads for the honor.

The Huskers are also looking to earn one of four double-byes for the Big Ten Tournament next week. The Huskers can earn the No. 4 seed by either defeating Penn State on Sunday or with a Michigan loss to Maryland on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions come into the matchup looking to rebound from the team’s 73-64 loss to Michigan. Penn State is also looking for its second win over Nebraska this season. The Nittany Lions fended off a comeback by Nebraska with 2.7 seconds remaining in overtime on Jan. 12. Penn State ultimately won 76-74.

Penn State brings a veteran lineup to Lincoln, which includes four starters from a year ago. The Nittany Lions also have five players averaging double figures. One of the players is sophomore point guard Tony Carr, who leads the Big Ten in scoring (19.6 ppg), and is fifth in assists (4.7 apg), second in 3-point percentage (.466) and seventh in free throw percentage (.827).
