Editor’s note: Nebraska football commit Brendan “Bookie” Radley-Hiles, the Huskers’ top-ranked 2018 recruit who plays at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is contributing a weekly first-person story to Land of 10. Here is the ninth installment, as told to beat writer Erin Sorensen.
What a week. After dealing with some personal matters, I was ready to head to Utah and face off against East High [Salt Lake City, Utah] with my IMG teammates. And it was exactly what I needed.
It was a business trip, but it was still a lot of fun. I can’t say it was strictly business because it was the most fun we’ve had as a team. We were even dancing on the sidelines. They played great uptempo music, so we were like, “OK, all right. We can dance to this.”
We started having fun on the plane ride to Salt Lake City. When we got to Colorado for our connecting flight, we were just having fun in the airport and playing around. We were locked in and engaged all week that it was time to relax and chill, knowing what we had to do.
Trey Sanders got it started in the game, taking it 52 yards into the end zone. Sure, East responded and even took the lead at times in the first half but IMG never quit. I even had a pick by the end of the night before IMG pulled away to win 43-19.
It was also sort of surreal being at East. My brother went to the University of Utah, so I’m actually really familiar with the area. It was almost like a second home when I was younger. East High School was directly across the street from where my brother lived. If you stood in the end zone of East, you could see my brother’s house.
I also used to work out at East. When I was younger, I’d go stay with my brother for 3-4 weeks. My brother and I are very close. He was sometimes like my dad growing up, even though we aren’t that far apart in age. When I would be with him in Utah, we would have our brother workouts together at East High when he didn’t have practice.
To come back and actually play against East so many years later, it was a big deal. It was made even more special because so many family members were able to come and support. Add that to the fun and success my teammates and I had? I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.
I had originally planned to visit Texas on Saturday, but that didn’t end up working out for a couple of reasons. There were some weather concerns, but they also had a big concert going on that blocked off streets and created some issues. They didn’t want recruits to have to deal with that. I might try to get back to Austin for another visit, but we’ll see. I’ll probably leave two officials open after the season, but I don’t know for sure.
As for this coming weekend, I’m still planning to be at Oklahoma with T.J. Pledger. I just want to see what Norman presents and I want to see what T.J. saw. It’s going to be a fun trip to be with him, and to also have my mom with me.
You’re never going to get these opportunities again in life. I don’t want to waste any moment.
