NCAA Tournament: Kansas advances to Sweet 16 with win over Seton Hall

Kansas-Seton Hall-NCAA Tournament-Second Round

For the third straight season, the Kansas Jayhawks are headed to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after beating Seton Hall 83-79 on Saturday night in Wichita.

3 Who Mattered

Malik Newman: With Devonte’ Graham having an off night, Newman stepped up and delivered a signature performance. The guard dropped a team-high 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting while adding 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Angel Delgado: Joining Hakeem Olajuwon as the only other player in NCAA Tournament history with 20-plus points and 20-plus rebounds against a No. 1 seed, Delgado led the Pirates all night. The big man finished with 24 points and 23 boards while also tallying 5 assists.

Udoka Azubuike: Playing his first significant minutes after missing the entire Big 12 Tournament with an MCL injury, Azubuike scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and pulled down 7 rebounds. He also had a pair of steals and blocks.

Observations

Welcome back Udoka Azubuike

The big man’s presence was a welcome addition back to the lineup for the Jayhawks.

While Azubuike didn’t tear up the stat sheet, his 10 points and 7 rebounds were much-needed contributions as Kansas battled Angel Delgado in the paint all night.

Kansas can even win without Devonte’ Graham at his best

Graham never quite looked like himself against the Pirates.

The Big 12 Player of the Year scored just 8 points and had 5 turnovers, with 4 coming in the first half. Graham did have 9 assists to hedge his effort.

Nevertheless, Graham’s supporting cast picked up the slack. Kansas got four double-digit scorers in Newman, Svi Mykhailiuk, Lagerald Vick and Azubuike coming off the bench.

The Number: 13

With the Jayhawks’ win, Bill Self punched his 13th ticket to the Sweet 16 over his coaching career.

What’s Next for Kansas Basketball

Kansas will get the winner of No. 4 Auburn-No. 5 Clemson in the Sweet 16 next week. Auburn and Clemson play tomorrow at 6:10 p.m. CT.
