Mother of QB Emory Jones discusses their official visit to Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — It’s crunch time for the nation’s No. 4 dual-threat quarterback, Emory Jones.

The Ohio State commit took official visits to Florida and Florida State over the weekend with his mother, Trina Jones.

“We got in late Sunday night,” Jones’ mother told SEC Country on Monday.

Jones, who is also considering Alabama, now has a final decision to make this week. The mid-year enrollee from Heard County High School (Franklin, Ga.) will reveal his choice on Wednesday and sign early, according to his mom.

The Gators are in need of a quarterback for their 2018 class after former commit Matt Corral flipped to Ole Miss last Thursday. Florida got Jones and his mother on campus the following day.

“The trip to Florida was great,” she said. “He’s been there before on a quick visit. Nothing that was in depth when he went previously. This visit was a really good one.”

Jones and his mother decided to give the Gators late consideration because of their preexisting relationship with new UF coach Dan Mullen and quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who worked with Mullen for three years (2014-16) at Mississippi State.

“Coach Mullen and Coach Johnson were the first coaches to offer Emory. They started recruiting him to Mississippi State the ninth grade,” she said. “So we have a little history with him. After he started getting other offers, then we didn’t talk as much.

“I have heard a lot of great things about the both and I’m sure Coach Mullen can come in and pick up where he was before. So him coming back and kind of stabilizing the program again. I feel good about that if that’s what is decided by Emory.”

That decision is still to be determined, according to his mom. She plans to sit down with him on Monday night and see where his head is at with the recruiting process.

“I don’t know what Emory’s thoughts are at this point. We’re still not there yet in terms of the decision,” she said. “This evening we’re going to spend some time talking and we’ll just go from there. I’m kind of ready for this to come to an end.

“I want him to be able to enjoy the rest of his senior year without recruiting. Everybody knows we’re in the middle of some craziness at the end of this journey, so we’re just trying to figure things out and move forward. Time is crunching in.”
